The Cultural Association was founded in November 2016 with the goal of popularizing, preserving and disseminating everything inherent in the history of information technology, as well as creating a “common home” for all associations pursuing the same goal. Through a large group of enthusiasts who monitor their activities through the group of the same name, the association has set itself the goal of attracting legally recognized organizations and associations to the opening of cooperation, and through initiatives, events and awareness-raising campaigns and a common promotion is the creation of a single museum of computer science and calculus distributed throughout the country. The association is part of a nonprofit organization based in the United States that organizes international events that, especially in the United States, celebrate and support the history of computers.
Most wanted vintage computers. The country has more than fifty museums and collections of computer technology of the past, distributed almost throughout the territory, from small private collections to national museums. In addition to the collection and exhibition, many of them carry out pedagogical, demonstration and experimental archaeological activities. In collaboration, the authors conducted a survey using a questionnaire to which 43 institutions responded. The article presents the results and discusses some critical aspects, suggesting the creation of a network that provides visibility, collaboration and information.
“It is often said that technology dehumanizes. I don’t agree for the simple reason that a person is technological by nature: that is, he develops tools that, in turn, return to him, changing him, ”the writer and epistemologist said in an interview with the newspaper in 2013. Therefore, it is quite natural that the story of our story about the human species cannot be separated from the artificial objects we created: if technology is one of the manifestations of being a “human”, from the origin of species
Over the past three centuries, we have witnessed its exponential development: this rapid development of theoretical knowledge and application methods created the need to collect evidence of its development, and therefore museums of science and technology arose to support collections of written documents and works of art, as the artifact historian claims primary source can provide answers to the most important questions about their development. It is often difficult, if not impossible, to describe a mechanism, even a simple one, in words, although it is able to see and touch it directly as much as possible. if it is damaged, it helps not only understand it, but also restore the mental path that generated it. In addition, in order to focus on computer science, they emphasize that “the constant and rapid progress of computer technology causes the rapid obsolescence of computer systems, their architecture and their physical components.
Information technologies, like other modern technologies, began to develop rather slowly in our country, but after their introduction they were adopted at a high speed and influenced society and individuals, the economy and politics, professions and pastime, as in any other developed country. In Italy, as in other countries, computer science history museums were born, and many amateur enthusiasts began to collect samples of old cars, collect them, store them and return them to operation, avoiding their disappearance in scraps. Thus, it seemed to the author to collect information about these small and large realities, starting with simple questions about how many of them there are, where they are, what they collect and what they do.
Finally, it seems appropriate to recall that there are other realities that have not yet been investigated by our study, which could contribute to the preservation of historical memory. We have in mind the industrial, commercial and administrative environment, which, since the years, has used computer technology to carry out its activities. In these areas (manufacturing, banks, insurance companies, local and national administrations, public services), you can probably find other collectibles forgotten in warehouses, often too large and difficult to purchase by individuals.
Old computers sale. There is no certainty in their existence: a private company, of course, does not waste expensive space for storing obsolete tools, and they are usually resold or sent to landfill. However, it is in these environments that you can find even more important elements: memories of their use, experience of the impact of computers on the business life and lives of employees, achieved benefits and problems arising from their implementation. , It would be useful and interesting to interview, before it is too late, the characters who in their role personally experienced changes and captured memories to be kept next to cars and printed documents.
